MEC Lehari intervenes in Mamusa taxi conflict

Commuters in Schweizer-Reneke in the Mamusa Municipality were left stranded on Monday morning when the North West Traffic Authorities braved the cold and rainy weather to check illegal taxi operators.

The illegal taxi operation in the area was brought to the attention of the Department, as two rival taxi associations were at each other’s throats. The investigation by the departments found one of the associations is operating without permits whilst the other is compliant.

In intervention meetings held separately with the two warring associations, MEC Sello Lehari requested the operators to find an amicable solution through dialogue and implore on them to act before the situation gets out of control. “Most taxi operators resolve their differences through violence and that is not how it is supposed to be. You must learn the art of engagement, negotiation and conflict resolution because violence will never be the solution to any problem,” said the concerned MEC Lehari.
“Taxi operators should desist from resolving problems with violence and those operating without licenses must stop doing so with immediate effect,” emphasised Lehari who will meet the two parties next week. He said the Department’s officials will be on the ground in the area to seek interventions on the conflict between the two. “When taxi operators are at logger heads, it is our people who bearing the brunt and suffer most because as they rely on these taxis to transport them to and from work. We cannot allow the situation unattended,” he said.

The Department has assigned a team of law enforcement officers to maintain law and order in the area.

MEC Lehari’s intervention in the Mamusa is part of the contribution towards the North West Premier Professor Job Mokgoro’s appeal to all departments to intensify service deliver in the embattled municipality.
